Trick or Treat 2015

Halloween in Downtown Kirkland wouldn't be the same without trick-or-treating at our local businesses! This Saturday 10/31/15 from 2-7 pm you'll find many of your local faves (and new ones too) participating. Kids under 10 need a parent with them.  Sorry if that foils your plan to drink at Hector's while your 8 year old collects candy. ;-)

Merrill Gardens (14 Main St. South) is throwing a little shindig for the kiddies too. Local families are invited to visit the Kirkland retirement community for some Halloween fun on Saturday 10/31, 2:00-4:00 PM. This free event will feature fun activities, games, a magic show (3pm), and lots of treats for trick-or-treaters. For more information, call 425-828-2570

And let me just say that-yes, clearly, I have been avoiding the election and the political tornado that is spinning all around us. Check here or here for hours of passionate opinions from Kirklanders.  I think Noah's Ark got built faster than we can figure out what the real story is on our ARC.  And I'm curious to know who writes the little paragraphs on the ballots that explain what we are voting for? Do both sides agree on the verbage because they really tend to leave an impression for me one way or the other.  And I don't know about you, but I am always relieved when someone is running unopposed- what fun it is filling in THAT little circle with complete confidence in my decision. So my two cents about politics is.... VOTE.  You've got a say... use it.

Savrika Shuts Its Doors

Savrikaoutside   Savrika 001 (thx Bill V for the photo!)

After 3 years of serving delicious and aromatic teas on Kirkland Ave, Savrika is closing. Boooooo! I've been in touch with the owner, Rupa Gadre, who said the cafe portion of the business was just too expensive to keep going. She decided to cut the cord when she sat down to do her taxes and realized she had yet another year of losses.  Rupa's plan is to be open by reservation/appointment through December and she will continue to sell bulk tea and accessories, which will be her new focus as she re-launches her website. She will retain the brand and merchandise.  Rupa is thankful to her loyal regulars who have been sharing their warmest memories of her shop.  If you'd like to drop a note or schedule a visit, email tea@savrika.com  or text 425-298-6570.  ~j

Oh, and a little birdie told me that the 'Seahawks House' in the Highlands neighborhood (with the over-the-top light display) might be showing up in a major network holiday decoration light fight show. Go Kirkland!

Let's Decorate Kirkland!

It feels like Summer just ended yesterday, but it is time it's time to start thinking about decorating Kirkland for the holidays.  The pumpkin lattes will soon transition to peppermint ones and then we KNOW it's time. Come out and help the Kirkland Downtown Association get Kirkland looking festive!

On November 14th, a group of over 100 people will take on the town - and hang garland, wreaths, and lights, and bring the Holiday spirit to Kirkland.  We would love for you to be a part of it! Please sign up here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0945aaa72eabfd0-winterfest  Then you can relax and enjoy your work at the Kirkland Winterfest event that will be held on November 29th at Marina Park, complete with the Argosy Christmas ships, and tree lighting.  Event from 2-6, and tree lighting at 5pm. Grab a friend and help our community get ready for this annual pre-holiday event. ~j

Rocketfizz: Candy Blast to the Past

RocketFizzOpeningDay (1)
Rocketfizz opened at around 1:00 on Sunday 10/4 to the jaw-dropping astonishment of small children everywhere.  My kids stepped inside 120 Central Way and could barely walk three steps as the colors and volume of candy hypnotized them. I am going to quote my daughter, Sydney (12) pictured above.  "This is crazy! I don't even know....what?...my mind is blown. "  THAT is how much candy is in there.  Kids everywhere cannot finish their sentences.

Jennifer Dixon (photo), owner of this local Rocketfizz franchise is excited to open in time for Halloween and get to know the locals. They have been busy unpacking and carefully stacking cases of sugared treasures in jenga configurations.  The store also has an incredible selection of sodas- from the brownie caramel cream rootbeer (43g sugar, say my children) to the PB & J, bacon or ranch dressing flavors, there is certainly something for everyone with a hankering for the bubbly stuff.

Hours aren't quite set yet- here is what's posted on their website but they are likely to change as Rocketfizz learns and predicts our local binging habits with more accuracy.  The nostalgia is worth the trip alone.  Many candies I haven't seen in years.  And I have to say nobody was complaining when we all split a Strawberry Charleston Chew on the car ride home. 425-822-9999 ~j

Lots of Action on Central Way

Most exciting news of the week that made me grin from ear to ear is that DeRu Market is opening a second location that will be on Central Way, called Little Brother.  Winter 2016.  CANNOT WAIT.

Also on the up/coming list would be Roo's World of Discovery at 108 Central Way (next to Santorini).  It is a Montessori-inspired indoor play and learning environment for children of all abilities from birth to 5 years old.

And I'm not sure what is up but there is a new sign that says "Salon Eir"  (pronounced air) where Lotus Salon & Spa used to be at 268 Central.  And their old phone number is now Eir's.  Name change? New owner? It appears that you can not only get your hair/wax/skin/nails/lashes/massage done here, but there's tarot and palm reading too.
